The Island

Angthong Marine Park

Ang Thong National Marine Park is made up of 42 islands featuring lime stone massifs, tropical rainforests and deserted beaches. The park covers 250 square kilometres, of which approximately one fifth is land mass. Most islands comprise limestone masses reaching heights of up to 400 metres, and fringed by beaches and rain forest. An emerald saltwater lake known as Tale Nai (Inland Sea) on Koh Mae Koh is the park's major scenic attraction, and entails a mildly strenuous climb. The resultant views are well worth the effort. Another popular venue is Koh Sam Sao where an extensive span of coral reef and a huge rock arch offer scenic fascination.

Ang Thong

This fascinating group of islands, within sight of Samui to the north and west, is geographically different from the other islands in the region. The Ang Thong islands rise from the sea as dramatic walls of rock soaring hundreds of metres high. Besides the many small coves and beautiful beaches, erosion has shaped some interesting formations. Particular features are Mae Koh (a beautiful beach) and Thale Nai (an emerald saltwater lake) both found on Koh Mae Koh. Koh Sam Sao has a coral reef and a huge rock arch as well as a hill providing great views of the surrounding area. There is a considerable amount of wildlife inhabiting the islands including the Asian long-tailed monkey (langur), hair-nosed otters, pacific reef egrets, white-bellied sea eagles, ashy drongos, tortoises, sea turtles, lizards and pythons. The surrounding sea is also the major spawning ground for the short-bodied mackerel, a tasty Thai delicacy. Snorkeling, walking and swimming are the most popular attractions of the region. The best time to visit this archipelago is late March to October when visibility is at its best. Get a few friends together and charter a boat so that you can explore the marvels of the 'Golden Basin' in your own time.

The park office is on Koh Wua Talap where bungalow-style accommodation is available. Visitors wishing to stay overnight should make advance bookings and specify whether meal services are required, either through the Angthong Marine National Park office, 26/1 Noo 5, Talatlang-Paknam Road, Surat Thani 8400, Tel: (077) 288-992, or the National Parks Division in Bangkok, Tel: 549-0529 or 579-4842.
